I’ve been smitten by fly fishing since a summer evening in 1960 while watching a gentlemen catch big red eyed rock bass off the end of the dock at Aitkin County’s Clear Lake. I was eight. That man could cast those poppers like a dream and the blood shot eyed bass just clobbered those cork bugs. From that time on, fly-fishing in its pure form, with a fly line, leader and fly has been to me the most elegant way there is to catch a fish.
I started fishing Lake Superior and it's tributaries in 1965 as an enthusiastic eleven year old with a wonderful dad willing to take me on new angling adventures.
Over the years I’ve seen anglers after steelheads tend to compromise the elegance of fly-fishing with do-dads of all sorts in order to improve the odds. I’ve always thought that switching gear to other more effective methods was better than compromising, so for me pure fly fishing took a backseat to the world of drift fishing with mono and lead, an art in itself. Our all to brief, exposure to Atlantic Salmon on Lake Superior’s North Shore 30 years ago brought me back to the sport and the fact that a great silver fish would grab a fly presented in the most elegant way.
It doesn't get any better than a nice fish grabbing a swung or stripped fly on a two-handed fly rod.
I have over forty years of angling experience, targeting trout and salmon in Western Lake Superiors Rivers and surf along with an intimate knowledge of the area rivers, watersheds, flow patterns and hydrologic characteristics. I'll teach you how to catch a steelhead on a swung fly.
